How to get to Rifugio Casentini:
- By car :
- coming from Lucca, you will drive on the "SS12" ("strada provinciale del Brennero") direction Castelnuovo Garfagnana until Borgo a Mozzano (km 20). Here you wil cross a bridge (with a little dam) to get on the opposite side of Fiume Serchio (Serchio River), driving upstream until you reach "Località Chifenti" . At the first y-intersection you keep left following signs to Aulla-Castelnuovo.You'll come to cross another bridge on Lima creek (in locality "Fornoli") and keep driving on the main road as it meanders for 2km (just ignore the first brown signs for Orrido di Botri pointing right).You'll get to a traffic circle where you will follow signs to Tereglio-Foce a Giovo, entering "ValFegana". Here a more steep uphill is about to begin (you will be staying on this road until youget to Rifugio Casentini: 22Km to go).After having passed the deviations for the vilages of Vitiana and Tereglio keep continuing on this road as signs for Orrido di Botri point right downhill, and after 8Km you'll find Rifugio Casentini on the right.- coming from North (Castelnuovo Garfagnana) drive on the "SS12" ("strada provinciale del Brennero") direction Lucca until you find a deviation on the left for Calavorno- Ghivizzano. After crossing a bridge at the T-intersection turn right (direction Lucca-Bagni di Lucca-Abetone).Drive about 1.5 Km until you reach a Traffic-circle where you will follow signs to Tereglio-Foce a Giovo, entering "ValFegana". Here a more steep uphill is about to begin (you will be staying on this road until youget to Rifugio Casentini: 22Km to go).After having passed the deviations for the vilages of Vitiana and Tereglio keep continuing on this road as signs for Orrido di Botri point right downhill, and after 8Km you'll find Rifugio Casentini on the right.
- By train-bus :
the easiest way to come by train (either coming from Lucca or Aulla) is getting off at Bagni di Lucca (Fornoli) train station then use the MiniBus (on call, ChiamaBus service, 0583 62312 or 0583 75113. You'll need to book it at least one day ahead. Working only on week-ends) You can ask to be dropped of in Tereglio village (1.60€/ticket on board). From here is about a 2hrs and half walk, following path n.09 to Rifugiani then n.38 to Ospedaletto (450m elevation gain)
